Mission
Such reawakening made us think of a different way to produce tea--the largest export crop of Sri Lanka . With numerous hardships and benevolent understanding, Nilmini Estate became perhaps the world's first hand-processed organic black tea producers in the world. Our mission is to provide nature friendly, labor friendly, healthy tea for the world.
Vision The idea originated about 20 years ago naturally, as Sri Lankans were influenced by many centuries old cultures and philosophical values. The estate owners and managers are fully exposed to modern education, culture and philosophy; yet they fully blended with centuries old historic, cultural and other values. The Nilmini Estate is a 95-acre block of land, 300-400 meter above sea level, for this remarkable activity. The land is located in the village called Ihala Millawa, about 80 km or 50 miles from Galle . It is the capital of Southern Sri Lanka and located in between Hikkaduwa and the famous beach resort Unawatuna.
This is a private land in a remote village surrounded by dark green lush vegetation and a number of perennial water springs. The area receives about 125 to 150 inches of annual rainfall and temperature ranges from about 23 to 27 degrees Celsius.
The land was originally used for rubber plantation during the British period and then was neglected for generations except for a small part. With the minimum disturbances to the green lush vegetation, the new tea crop propagation was introduced in 1998 and maintained in the best possible ways to be nature friendly. So far only about 10 acres of land was bought under the organic tea crop.
All activities were carried out manually without any chemicals or machinery or equipment except for small shovels. Racial harmony was brought to the estate by bringing various ethnic groups to work together. Clean water was tapped from ever lasting springs. Villagers were brought to the process by providing employment opportunities and several social and spiritual development programs. Religion is practiced without bias or prejudice to any specific organized or dominant faith.
Individual freedom was allowed to the maximum level. Some of the managers and workers practice vegetarianism. Other non-violent activities were also promoted in the estate. Thus the tea produced in the estate is named Ahinsa Tea. The word Ahinsa (Ahimsa in Indian origin) was taken from Sanskrit to reflect non-violence, independence, spiritual freedom and appreciation of all living being. The Ahinsa Tea® is probably the world's first organically produced and hand-processed black tea.
